The creation of social anxiety disorder and the accompanying need to medicate it shows how drug companies can exploit the DSM criteria and turn distressing but normal emotions such as shyness into widespread mental disorders. Formerly shy people can now see themselves as having an illness with a pharmaceutical solution. Allen Frances later expressed regret that the DSM-IV did not increase the diagnostic threshold for social phobia: “We clearly had our collective heads in the sand and badly miscalculated.”114
